See How We Transformed This Denver Garage

Before and After: An overhaul took this garage from an all-too familiar unorganized space to a sleek, functional storage center.

A look at our step-by-step process and tips to prepare for your garage’s makeover.

Over the past few years, homeowners have made the most of every space in their homes. The garage is no exception. Here in Denver, Colorado, the garage is a vital part to a home’s functionality. At Custom Garage Solutions, we take a garage and add unexpected functionality, space and cleanliness.

Most Coloradans enter and exit their home through the garage, so to have an immaculate home partnered with a disaster of a garage doesn’t make much sense. In three short days, Custom Garage Solutions can turn your disorganized and unsightly garage into the envy of the neighborhood. Our process is simple and starts with the homeowner decluttering the space. Go into this process knowing that it is okay to get rid of things that you haven’t used in years. If you are planning on holding on to everything, then your new garage will eventually look like your old garage.

To help with this difficult step, we recommend buying a Waste Management Bagster Bag. They are available at your local Ace Hardware, Lowes or Home Depot. These bags can hold up to 3300 pounds so there will be plenty of space to get rid of the unused items in the garage.  When you are ready to have it picked up call Waste Management (1 (866) 909-4458) and they will come out in a flash. If you have items that could be of use to someone else, contact your local ARC and schedule a donation pick-up so these items can go to a new home. See all accepted donation items and how ARC benefits your Colorado community at arcthrift.com/donations.

Next, have a plan on where you are going to put things that live in the garage.  We will need everything off of the ground to install our floor system.  If we are also doing cabinets and/or paint, plan on having all the items off of the walls as well. Your things will need to be out of the garage area for 3-4 days. If weather is not ideal, we can order a POD to store and protect your items.

On the first day, we paint. We roll on two layers of the paint color of your choice.  This garage went with a very light grey paint called Thin Ice. Next, we get the floor in the best state to install the first coat and the flake.  A lot of prep goes into this day.  We run a floor grinder over the entire floor and use a hand grinder to get those places where the floor grinder can’t reach. We also grind out any cracks and fill them to make for the smoothest final surface we can.  Once the prep work is done we put down the first coat of the epoxy and cover it with a vinyl flake chip color blend. This garage went with Salt & Pepper for their flake selection, which is our customers’ most popular choice. The Salt & Pepper style is also very effective at hiding any dirt that accumulates on the garage floor over time.

The prep continues on day two. First, we reclaim as much of the flake as we possibly can.  We then use big floor scrapers to get up any of the flake that didn’t stick to the base coat of epoxy.  After that, we vacuum the entire surface a couple of times to get it as clean as possible for the top coat which is Polyaspartic. Polyaspartic is the best product out there for the top coat as it doesn’t fade like a typical epoxy so it lasts much longer. Read here for 7 benefits of Polyaspartic for garage flooring.

On the third and final day we installed custom cabinets. This is when the space really starts to come together!  Photos can speak a thousand words, and the transformation of this garage is clear. The change created in just four short days is astounding. This garage went with a white and platinum 6-piece cabinet set with a bamboo workbench. These items add personal style and connection to the rest of any home.

In order for the floor to set up, day five is when organizing and moving back in can begin. This is when you can start to enjoy the functionality and additional square footage you’ve gained with this quick update to your home.

“My husband has always dreamed of having one of those super organized garages with the cool flooring. He even tried to do it himself at our old house with NOT good results. Now, because of Custom Garage Solutions we have a beautiful, organized garage with plenty of space for all of our stuff. The cabinetry is just so sleek! I only wish we had done it sooner. What's the point of having a nice, well cared for home with a disaster in the garage? Our neighbors are all calling CGS to get with the program.” Brenda Abdilla and Kevin Hood

We’re grateful for all of our customers and our referrals. Not only are they excited to see and use their new garages, but we truly feel rewarded seeing their newfound pride and usefulness in their garage.
